Solo travel Dominican Republic: Beautiful white sandy beach with palms in Cap Cana on a bright sunny summer day with deep blue skies over the water.

If you are thinking about taking your next “soliday” to the Caribbean region, let me tell you upfront that a Dominican Republic solo travel journey will offer you a lot of unforgettable experiences.

I know! As a solo female traveler, I had an amazing time in the Dominican Republic, traveling everywhere by myself for over a month. I felt safe the whole time; it was easy to travel around, and the specter of adventures was wide!

With the Latine ambiance, breathtaking beaches, lush tropical landscapes, and rich culture, the Dominican Republic has become a super popular destination for solo travelers looking for adventure and lazy days on the beach (for the latter, go to Punta Cana).

Let me tell you more about what you can do traveling solo in the Dominican Republic.

Best Destinations In The Dominican Republic

The DR is not a very big island, so you can choose to visit several destinations around the island if you don’t really like to spend all your time in one place.

Also, public transportation works well between the most popular destinations, so I opted for buses a lot of the time!

Capital Santo Domingo

Part of Los Tres Ojos

I loved Santo Domingo!

Especially the historic city, Zona Colonial, is a lively and charming area that offers lots of history and historic sites, city life with amazing dining options and restaurants, and also a vibrant nightlife.

The historic city of Santo Domingo is actually protected on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

You can stroll the charming streets of the old city, visit Los Tres Ojos (the three eyes) ancient cave system (please do; it is incredible!), take the teleferico for an airy city overview, or walk along the Malecon boardwalk at sunset.

And there are plenty of paradisiacal beaches not too far from Santo Domingo as well.

The Northern Shores of the DR

Puerto Plata beaches, this one outside the Blue Jacktar hotel, with incredible double sun beds with ceiling and curtains
Playa Dorada in Puerto Plata

Along the northern shores of the DR, you will find several charming colonial smaller towns as well as stunning beaches and sometimes a bit of rugged sea facing the Atlantic Ocean up here!

Check out places like Las Terrenas, Samana (where the humpback whales come every year), and Puerto Plata, the silver port!

You can get a bus here from Santo Domingo, get an Uber, or do the luxury travel version and book a private transfer from door to door from wherever you are!

Punta Cana And The Eastern Shores

The eastern part of DR, in Bavaro with Punta Cana and Cap Cana, is where you find the beach- and resort heaven of the Dominican Republic.

Here, you will be basking in paradise beaches, crystal waters, and amazing sea activities, as well as a myriad of luxury 5-star resorts sitting right on the surf.

This is where you find your Caribbean zen, but also, it is only a couple of hours on the bus (or taxi) from the capital, Santo Domingo! You can have it all from here!

If you fly into Punta Cana for your holiday, there are a variety of airport transfer options from Punta Cana airport you might want to check out!

Barahona & Bahia de las Aquilas

Paradisiacal beach in Bahia de las Aguilas along the southern coast of the Dominican Republic, with white warm sands and an incredibly blue calm sea under the blue sky
The deserted beach in Bahia de las Aguilas south in the DR

The only area I did not really enjoy in the DR was one town along the southern shores a few hours west of Santo Domingo, which is actually a really popular destination. That was Barahona.

Barahona

This was the only place where I experienced a lot of catcalling and unwanted attention. I did not feel unsafe; I was just super annoyed that I was unable to walk around at all, relaxed and enjoying my stay.

Also, Barahona was incredibly littered, there was plastic and garbage on every corner and small park or lawn. So, I was not really impressed.

That said, it was nevertheless a super starting point for tours along the southern shores towards the border with Tahiti. And I did find a few nice restaurants with a good atmosphere and food.

Bahia De Las Aguilas

I loved my trip to Bahia de las Aguilas, which is a secluded beach only accessible by boat (unless you walk a few miles through the dry, bushy wilderness).

So this part of the south was really stunning, but it will take you a while to get here. The drive from Barahona takes about three hours. I booked a tour, but I assume you can also rent a car, get the GPS going, and find your own way!

From the end-point, Cueva de las Aguilas, I had a 15-minute boat trip, and I was basically on my own on this long stretch of a white paradise beach, which was totally worth it.

The start point for the boat trip also had a restaurant where I had one of the best meals in the entire Dominican Republic! You can safely eat at the Dona Charo, and there is also a small diving center located here to take you out if you love scuba diving.

There was also a glamping site here that looked cool, which I found out was called Ecolodge Cueva de las Aguilas. Here, you will live in white, airy tents right on the beach, where you could walk straight out of a comfy bed into the waves in the morning.

Things To Do Solo Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic boasts an extensive list of activities, tours, and experiences for solo travelers.

Whether you’re seeking relaxation, culture, or adventure, you’re in the right place if you’re in the Dominican Republic.

A Few More Fun Things To Do DR Traveling Solo

I found this incredible sushi place in Zona Colonial

Here are the top 11 things to do when traveling solo in the Dominican Republic!

  1. Explore the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo: Meander through the cobblestone streets of the oldest European settlement in the New World, experiencing the rich history and stunning architecture.

For history buffs, you should visit important landmarks like the Cathedral of Santa María la Menor and the Fortaleza Ozama, pretty sure you will be impressed.
  2. Relax on the picturesque beaches: you will discover the striking beauty of the Dominican Republic’s coastline, from the postcard-perfect shores of Bavaro Beach to the secluded, tranquil Playa Rincon. Enjoy pristine sands, swaying palm trees, and stunning sunsets by yourself if you want to.
  3. Need a challenge? Hike the Pico Duarte! You can join a trek to the Caribbean’s highest peak, Pico Duarte, which offers unparalleled views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

This multi-day trek takes you through diverse landscapes, from lush rainforests to arid highlands, and it is stunning if you like a bit of physical activity on your holiday. You can also do a more gentle hike to the Eastern Cordillera.
  4. Scuba-dive into an adventure: DR is great for diving. You can hover through the vibrant underwater world, whether snorkeling or scuba diving, exploring crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life. Try to visit renowned diving spots like La Caleta Underwater National Park and Catalina Island.
  5. Visit the 27 Charcos of Damajagua: This is one of (if not the) most popular excursions in the DR. Truly a thrilling journey, navigating through a series of 27 natural pools and cascading waterfalls. This adventure requires swimming, jumping, and sliding through the awe-inspiring surroundings, so you need to be up for that to enjoy it!
  6. Definitely delve into Dominican cuisine: Make sure you savor the mouthwatering flavors of local dishes, such as mofongo, sancocho, and the quintessential dish, la Bandera.

You can also take a cooking class or visit local markets to experience the island’s culinary diversity first-hand. Or, do a chocolate tour – a whole day dedicated to your sweet tooth!
  7. Dive into the island’s history: Even if history is not your passion, I recommend you visit some museums and cultural centers, like the Amber Museum in Puerto Plata or the Alcázar de Colón in Santo Domingo. The Dominican Republic has a rich history that I think you might find interesting, at least a little.

If you have the time, explore the Taino heritage and learn about the influence of European, African, and Middle Eastern cultures.

The indigenous culture is especially visible along the northern shores, in towns like Puerto Plata and further east.

8. Dance the night away: Embrace the lively nightlife and learn the art of merengue, bachata, or salsa, allowing the rhythm of the music to carry you away.

If you can, join street parties or vibrant clubs, such as Jet Set Club in Santo Domingo or Coco Bongo in Punta Cana.

9. Nature and national parks: Discover the natural wonders of Los Haitises National Park. Experience the breathtaking beauty of this protected park, featuring lush mangrove forests, dramatic limestone cliffs, and a network of caverns adorned with ancient Taino petroglyphs.

Or go whale watching in Samana in the season between December and March!

10. Take a boat or catamaran tour and go snorkeling, or just chill in the sun, only a step (or leap) from the beautiful oceans.

11. Experience local culture, doing things like watching a baseball game: Baseball is more than just a sport in the Dominican Republic—it’s a way of life, and they are really serious about it!

So try to attend a baseball game at one of the many stadiums across the country, such as Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo or Estadio Cibao in Santiago.

So far, it is one of my favorite islands in the Caribbean, and I would love to go back.

You will meet friendly locals, vibrant traditions, and diverse landscapes that create the perfect atmosphere for an extraordinary solo journey with the freedom to design your very own vacation.

Is Punta Cana Good For Solo Travel?

Best beaches in Punta Cana Dominican Republic. The Punta Cana beach is stunning, with white sands, crystal-clear water, surrounded by palm trees!
Punta Cana Beach

Punta Cana is the Dominican Republic’s resort haven, including the high-end gated community area Cap Cana, which is full of luxury resorts, and the whole area is considered relatively safe.

I was on foot a lot of the time in Punta Cana and Cap Cana, and everyone I met was super helpful, respectful, and polite.

With its miles of powdery white sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and many activities, Punta Cana is a really beautiful area that will make you feel warm and fuzzy if you are longing for a beach getaway.

You can also find great budget stays here, some of the smaller resorts, or a holiday home.

I usually use VRBO for that, and I found a super nice apartment with a pool in the common areas. Like a tiny resort!

Dominican Republic Solo Female Travel

The Dominican Republic is also a good choice for solo female travelers. During my one-month-plus stay on the island, I never felt unsafe or had any bad experiences.

The whole island offers a vibrant and fun experience with a warm, welcoming culture, and you can (and should) explore the island’s stunning natural beauty.

You can participate in women-focused experiences, such as joining a local cooking class or taking a dance lesson to learn traditional Dominican styles like merengue or bachata.

Connect with local women artisans by visiting their workshops, like jewelry makers or pottery studios.

As a solo female traveler, you should prioritize your safety also here, as with any destination. Hand on heart, I loved traveling around the DR, on buses, taxis, or just strolling on foot, and I felt at ease and safe the whole time.

Short storytime: One time, a taxi driver in Santo Domingo got a bit elated when he realized I had walked by myself after dark and said I had to be careful.

When I asked him if I needed to be scared of violent crimes or things like rape, he said, “Oh noooo,” but that there were bad people looking to pickpocket tourists – especially after dark.

So I concluded Santo Domingo is not a lot more stressful than most other destinations where petty crime is always something to look out for.

Of course, what makes a good resort choice for a solo traveler will vary depending on what amenities you want or need, but it is safe to assume that there are some common denominators!

It should probably be an adult-only place, with at least a variety of activities to join when you want to socialize, a variety of dining options, and inviting common areas where you can hang out if you feel inclined.

And naturally, you need a beach.

Here are a few good top-rated resorts you can consider for your Caribbean solo getaway in Punta Cana.

My Basic Tips For Solo Travel Dominican Republic

Here are also a few basic tips that might make your trip to the Dominican Republic more enjoyable and easier, too.

  • Learn some basic Spanish phrases before you go. While more and more people in the DR speak English, especially in tourist areas, learning a few basic Spanish phrases can enhance your experience and help you connect with locals.
  • Find your way on public transportation. Transportation options, such as guaguas (shared minibusses), and motoconchos (motorcycle taxis), offer an affordable and authentic way to explore the island alone. Prioritize safety here, too, do some research, and make sure you’re choosing reputable transportation options.

  • Connect with other travelers. Solo travel doesn’t have to be lonely, and engaging with fellow travelers at your hotel or hostel, on guided tours, or during group activities can get you a few entertaining hours and maybe lead to new friendships through enriching shared experiences.
  • Embrace a bit of spontaneity. One of the true joys of solo travel is the freedom to make decisions on the go. So try to do that here, and allow yourself to embrace fun opportunities and experiences as they arise, making the most of your Dominican Republic adventure.

Is Dominican Republic Safe For Solo Travelers?

The Dominican Republic is considered a relatively safe destination for solo travelers.

In the old city of Santo Domingo, Zona Colonial, there is an increased police presence; they even have their own police brigade dedicated to tourism safety, the tourist police. Outside the old city, safety is considered a little lower, but I never had any bad experiences myself.

It’s always important to use common sense and take a few precautions, such as staying in well-trafficked, well-lit areas, avoiding nighttime walks alone, not getting drunk, and being aware of your surroundings.

Solo Traveler Safety In Santo Domingo

Strolling around in Zona Colonial you will be surrounded by charming colonial houses decorated with flowers and plants like this white painted brick house with elegantly decorated windows on a sunny day
Colonial houses in Zona Colonial

Santo Domingo, the bustling capital city of the Dominican Republic, is also generally safe for solo travelers.

Especially in the Zona Colonial, there are police present on “every corner”, and in the DR there is even a designated police force to help tourists!

In the rest of the city, there is a higher risk of crime, but still, generally, this is limited to petty crime and sometimes street robberies. Although that is something you clearly want to avoid, just know that violent crimes are not very common.

As with any urban destination, it’s essential to take necessary precautions, such as staying in well-trafficked areas, avoiding nighttime walks alone, and being aware of your surroundings.

Sticking to reputable transportation options and keeping an eye on your pockets, zippers, and bags will also help you stay out of trouble.

Solo Traveler Safety In Punta Cana

Punta Cana, known for its luxurious resorts and stunning beaches, is considered a safe destination for solo travelers.

Resorts in the area prioritize guest safety, offering secure accommodations and on-site activities.

However, it’s always important to stay vigilant and take appropriate precautions, such as not leaving valuables unattended, never leaving your drink alone, and avoiding unlit areas at night.

Should I Go To Punta Cana Alone?

Charming beach bar in Punta Cana

Absolutely. Punta Cana is an excellent destination for solo travelers, offering a wealth of activities, relaxation, and it is also considered relatively safe.

You can choose a budget stay in Punta Cana by choosing a holiday home with all amenities, like a kitchen, so you can make your own food. Relax by the apartment pool (many places have that), and be within walking distance from Punta Cana beach.

Whether you’re seeking solitude, adventure, or cultural immersion, Punta Cana has something to offer every type of solo traveler.

Is Dominican Republic Expensive For Solo Travel?

Santo Domingo Malecon boardwalk

It can be, but it does not have to be. The Dominican Republic has a range of accommodation options to suit various budgets, making it a good destination for solo travelers whether you are on a budget or not.

All-inclusive resorts will definitely give you a more luxurious experience, but you probably have to open your wallet a little wider. It is possible, though, to find reasonably priced options for this, too.

By researching and planning ahead, solo travel to the Dominican Republic will be a wonderful and not-too-expensive experience. Choose public transport (works perfectly), find hostels, check out VRBO, or low-star hotels that still have great reviews.

You can explore the Dominican Republic without breaking the bank!

Where To Travel As A Solo Female In The Caribbean?

Great question!

As a solo female traveler who has been traveling around the Caribbean and Central America by myself for the last few years, I have an article all about that. But my short answer is, as good as everywhere.

The only island so far that I have felt that I need to take a lot of precautions (although I did not have any bad experiences – maybe because of the precautions) was Jamaica, especially in Kingston Town.

You can read more about the best Caribbean islands for solo female travel here.
