What To Expect On A Stingray City Tour!

When you go on a tour to visit the majestic creatures of Stingray City, you can expect to swim alongside dozens of these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.

Or, more accurately, they will swim by you!

On the morning of your tour, you will be picked up at your hotel and head for the marina, where the guides welcome you onboard your boat for the day and give you a briefing of what is going to happen!

Snorkeling At Starfish Point

Stop number 1: Starfish Point where we could exit the boat on the beach and visit the starfish on the sand bottom. People walking in the shallow crystal clear water along the beach.
Stop number 1 Starfish Point

The first stop on this tour is a calm beach where you get to snorkel with starfish while your guide will tell you all about this small but amazingly sturdy little creature.

And the next stop is the famous Stingray City.

The Amazing Swimming With Stingrays!

Wow, I really was not prepared for how superiorly cool this experience would be!

When arriving at Stingray City, the water is crystal clear, and on the sandbank where you will meet them, the water never exceeds five feet (in case you were worried about that).

Before you exit the boat, the crew will give a thorough briefing on how to behave in the water to make sure you do not hurt or disturb the stingrays or yourself.

You will also get a tiny piece of fish meat (stingrays love that) to feed them, but be careful.

There are a myriad of other tropical fish in the water that will snap it from you if you are not careful (which happened to me).

From the moment you step into the water, the stingrays will start crisscrossing the sandbank in packs or alone, brushing by your feet in the shallow waters like shiny shadows.

This is why you will be told to drag your feet and not step around, as you don’t want to accidentally step on a stingray!

It is super weird, and I have to admit I felt a bit nervous even as a seasoned scuba diver, and I found myself jumping a couple of times.

There will be both guides and a photographer in the water to help you, and if you feel up for it, you can have a close encounter and feed one of the stingrays (and maybe get a kiss).

Experienced guides (who know what they are doing) will help you feed a stingray, touch it, and even give it a kiss if you fancy that!

The highlight of the excursion is taking pictures with the stingrays, not so much because of the photos, but that is when you get up close and personal.

The boat crew will gently handle the stingrays, giving you the chance to pose for a perfect picture—which you will probably appreciate later!

Throughout the tour, expert guides will be on hand to ensure that you get the most out of your swim with stingrays experience and make some incredible memories!

“Really enjoyed this!”
“There were only 20 people, so it’s a smaller group which I prefer. Just enough time at each stop to see everything. Great and friendly crew. Would totally recommend”.

Swimming with stingrays in a natural environment in Grand Cayman is an exciting experience that visitors of all ages can enjoy.

When swimming with stingrays, safety is always the top priority, and expert guides are on hand to ensure that you follow the correct protocols.

Stingrays are generally gentle creatures and pose no threat if they are respected. Visitors will be briefed on how to swim and interact with them respectfully before entering the water.

This includes no sudden movements or touching, as this may startle the animal. If these guidelines are followed, swimming with stingrays is perfectly safe for all involved.

Though some visitors may be nervous (I was!), rest assured, these amazing creatures are usually very friendly and approachable, and you don’t need to worry!

When Is The Best Time To Visit Stingray City?

The best time to visit Stingray City in Grand Cayman is during the summer months when the waters are warm and visibility is at its peak.

The stingrays love the warmer water and can be seen in larger numbers during this period.

From May until August, temperatures hover around 30 degrees Celcius, allowing you to enjoy the swim with the stingrays even more.

Visiting Stingray City in Grand Cayman during the summer months also allows you to have the best possible visibility underwater.

Since the rays swim close to the surface, clear water conditions are essential for making the most of your swim with them.

Additionally, summer months are usually less crowded due to the short school break, so you will often have more swim time with fewer other people in the water.
